What is Sibrel?

Choose your perspective.

A place for your people.

Sibrel brings private chats, groups, communities and calls together. Join an existing host to start talking — you do not need to administer a server.

  • Share messages, reactions, files and voice notes.
  • Meet in voice channels, video calls and screen sharing.
  • Choose a host you trust: its operator affects reliability and data handling.
Guide, benefits and limitations

Independent hosts. Connected conversations.

A Tauri/web client, Node.js API, PostgreSQL, S3-compatible storage and LiveKit. Hosts exchange signed federation requests; bots use REST and a WebSocket Gateway.

  • Separate media and storage, configure roles, bots and webhooks.
  • Supported new attachments are encrypted on the client; this is not end-to-end encryption of all chat text.
  • Backups, updates, host compatibility and uptime are the operator’s responsibility.

Features

Closer to your people.

From a private conversation to a whole community, in one place.

Keep the conversation going

Direct and group chats, replies and reactions. Pick up where you left off.

Room for your community

Channels, roles and permissions. Make a space that works for your team.

Choose where files live

Connect S3-compatible storage. The host owner decides where files are stored.

Your own infrastructure

Run a host on your server and manage access. Conversations across hosts send data to the receiving host.

Make yourself at home

Light, dark and colourful themes. Choose the look you enjoy using.

Find your way back

Search available messages and people to return to the conversation you need.

Calls and screen sharing

Voice channels, video calls and screen sharing, depending on your host’s media setup.

Protected attachments

Client-side encryption of supported new files, voice notes and video messages.

Bots and commands

Slash commands, buttons, embeds and separate bot permissions in each community.

Webhooks

Notifications from your services and build systems in a text channel.

Emoji and stickers

Custom packs, reactions and appearance, when allowed by your host.

Moderation and reports

Roles, member restrictions, audit logs and built-in reporting.

Features reflect the current project source. Your host and installed client must support them; available downloads may predate some changes.

Federation

Different servers. One conversation.

Your friend can choose another host. Federation connects independent Sibrel servers so you can talk across them.

How it works

  1. 1
    Manifest

Each host announces its name and public key.

  2. 2
    Handshake

Hosts establish a trusted connection for exchanging messages.

  3. 3
    Delivery

The sender signs requests. The receiving host checks signatures and replay protection.

  4. 4
    Addressing

Your name and host form an address: @username#hostname.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a self-hosted messenger?

Run the Sibrel server on your own machine or a rented VPS. The host owner manages infrastructure and access. Files can use separate S3-compatible storage.

Do I need to install an app?

You can start with the web version in your browser. Separate Windows and Android apps are available in the downloads section.

What does “federated” mean?

Independent Sibrel servers can exchange messages. Choose your host and talk with people on connected hosts. Availability depends on the participating servers.

What does a user address look like?

Across the network users are addressed as @username#hostname. For example, @anna#sibrel.net. On your own host a simple username is enough.

How is security ensured between hosts?

The federation protocol uses Ed25519 signatures and replay checks. A signature verifies the sender; it does not by itself provide end-to-end encryption.

Is Sibrel compatible with Matrix?

Sibrel uses its own federation protocol. Direct Matrix compatibility is not supported.

Can I host my own messenger with calls on my server?

Yes. Sibrel is a self-hosted solution for calls, private chats and communities. You deploy your own host, while voice channels, video and screen sharing use a configured LiveKit media server.

Is there free hosting for the messenger?

You can choose an existing public Sibrel host; its operator sets registration and payment terms. Sibrel itself does not provide a free VPS or storage. Running your own host requires a server, database and media resources.

Can a self-hosted messenger work in Russia and China?

You can deploy Sibrel on a server and domain of your choice. Access from Russia, China and other countries depends on that host’s availability, network restrictions and media configuration. Check connectivity, messages and calls on the networks you plan to use.
